A 2022 Lambda Literary Award Finalist in the transgender fiction category, She Who Became the Sun is the fantastical, genderqueer retelling of the founding of the Ming dynasty in China. Though the daughter of a poverty-stricken family is fated for nothing, she assumes her brother's identity to become a male novice in a monastery in order to escape her fate. After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, she takes the chance to claim another future altogether: her brother's abandoned greatness.
