Book Club Kits Available at BPL
by Andrea Gilmer, Community Engagement Librarian

This week in library news, I received a request to write about a library service that even I have been forgetting that we offer. Terrible of me, I know, but I appreciate the reminder. So this column is dedicated to our book club kits.

I know the name of this service makes them pretty self-explanatory, but let me lay out some of the details you may not be aware of. For instance, did you know that you, as a library patron, can check out these kits for your own book club or classroom? These kits come in an easy-to-carry zippered tote with 12 copies of the title you’ve requested and a folder with suggested discussion questions, a leader checklist, the kit policy, and a list of other resources you may find useful for your group discussion. In addition, you get to keep these kits for 6 weeks!

Now, I mentioned that the book club kits could be checked out for your book club or classroom, and that is because we have a selection of kits appropriate for mid- to late-elementary age and on up for our adults. Our current collection contains about 65 titles for adult clubs, 14 for teens (YA), and 16 for children. It includes a variety of kits ranging through fiction and non-fiction, currently popular titles, classics, and more. We love to get suggestions for new selections, so feel free to stop in and ask about the kits. You can use our catalog to find out what titles we already have by typing “book club kit” into the search, or you can ask any of our amazing staff members and they will check for you!

If you’re interested in learning more about our book club kits, but hesitate to check them out yourself, you can join one of the many book clubs offered at our branches. Aulds has their next meeting on December 11 at 11:00am for adults, the History Center has theirs on December 6th at 6:00pm, and Central has their adults meet on December 20 at 6:00pm and their kids on December 11 at 6:00pm. Continuing with the theme, Haughton offers two adult book clubs on December 17 at 6:00pm and December 11 at 9:30am; while Plain Dealing is offering clubs for the whole family with adults meeting on December 17 at 5:00pm, teens on December 20 at 4:30pm, and kids on December 11 at 4:00pm. And finally, our Tooke Branch has a club on December 17th at 2:00pm for their adults and December 29 at 4:30pm for their teens. As has become clear we offer a multitude of options, and I didn’t even mention that clubs that aren’t meeting in December! Come by and join us, or contact us for more details!
